Money Mentors A new civilian statewide program, "Money Mentoring for Military Families" was announced at a news conference on TUE 09 OCT 07 at VA Medical Center LEXKY. Announcing the new program was Kentucky State Treasurer Jonathan Miller, with supporting remarks by Congressman Ben Chandler (KY-6th) and LFUCG Mayor Jim Newberry. Explaining the administration and operations of the new program was BMAC Chairman Tom Baker.
"Money Mentoring for Military Families," is another way that civilians in Kentucky can support our troops and say thank you for your military service.
Since the first deployment of troops to OEF, then OIF, Active Duty, Guard and Reserve families have been faced with incredible emotional strains due to separation of family members in harm's way and quite often severe financial challenges. Many members of the Reserve Components live more than 90 miles from a military installation with structured and staffed family readiness support programs. These family members go to work, school and church living in the general civilian population that does not always understand or fully appreciate the difference in the lives of military family members. Recognizing this, in 2002 the BMAC Family Assistance Network (FAN) was formed with civilian professionals in the health and human services in central Kentucky standing ready to assist families of deployed military members. A list of those organizations can be found at http://www.bmaconline.org/. Now, BMACFAN is expanding statewide to offer financial literacy.
Through BMAC, a civilian non-profit 501c3 education organization in support of the U.S. Armed Forces, its members, veterans and families, this new civilian support program is being offered to military members, veterans and their families to help them to deal with financial matters. Professionals from the financial field, Certified Public Accountants (CPA) and CFP (Chartered Financial Planners), secured by the KY State Treasurer Jonathan Miller, will present financial literacy education workshops to help military members and their families to better understand money matters. Information will provide reliable resources for their benefit.
BMAC will administer the program, conduct workshops statewide and pair individual families to volunteer professional money mentors.
The pilot for this program is being introduced Thursday, October 25 6:30-8 pm at Tates Creek Christian Church, Tates Creek Rd., LEXKY. Future dates and sites will be announced on this Website.
