USS Kentucky Sailor to Re-enlist in Capitol Rotunda

FRANKFORT, KY-Master Chief Machinist's Mate (SS) Peter A. Arriza will be re-enlisting in the Navy 4 pm on Wednesday, April 16, 2008 in the Capitol Building Rotunda. He is currently serving aboard the USS Kentucky Gold Crew as the auxiliary division leading chief petty officer. His commanding officer, Commander Benjamin Pearson III, will perform the ceremony. Following the re-enlistment, Lieutenant Governor Daniel Mongiardo will present Pearson, Arriza, and eight additional USS Kentucky crew members with Kentucky Colonel Commissions, including Electronics Technician (SS) Michael Mires, a Horse Cave-native.
Marine Ted Bassett receives Department of the Navy Award

Lexington, KY: On the 232nd birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps, Saturday, November 10, 2007, Keeneland Association, Inc. board member and decorated World War II veteran James E. (Ted) Bassett III was presented with the Department of the Navy "Superior Public Service Award." It is the second-highest civilian honor bestowed by the Department of the Navy and recognizes significant contributions by a civilian to the Navy, Marine Corps or entire Department of the Navy. The award was presented during the 15th annual invitational breakfast celebrating the birthday of The Corps, at the Thoroughbred Club of America.
Veterans Appreciation Week 2007, in Kentucky

During the week beginning Sunday November 11, 2007, Kentuckians will have many opportunities to recognize and honor veterans of the United States Armed Forces. School teachers will set aside periods to inform students about the contributions of veterans to this nation.
Many people confuse Veterans Day and Memorial Day, but the two days are distinctly different in purpose.
Veterans Day is the day set aside to thank and honor ALL those who served honorably in the military - in wartime or peacetime. In fact, Veterans Day is largely intended to thank LIVING veterans for their service, to acknowledge that their contributions to our national security are appreciated.
Introducing a new civilian program: Money Mentoring for Military Families

At a news conference scheduled for 1000 HRS TUE 09 OCT 07 at VAMC LEXKY LEESTOWN ROAD, a new civilian statewide program will be announced, named "Money Mentoring for Military Families." Announcing the new program will be Kentucky State Treasurer Jonathan Miller, with supporting remarks by Congressman Ben Chandler (KY-6th) and LFUCG Mayor Jim Newberry. Explaining the administration and operations of the new program will be BMAC Chairman Tom Baker.
BMAC Roundtable - Vietnam War

The first in an ongoing series of educational military-oriented roundtables will be initiated with a focus on the Vietnam War. Two combat veterans of that war will read passages from their published works and take questions from the audience. The authors will sell and autograph copies of their books at the conclusion of the program.
Sailors From USS Kentucky to Visit the Commonwealth

Commander Alan Holt, Commanding Officer of USS Kentucky (SSBN 737) Blue Crew, "The Thoroughbred of the Fleet," and four sailors from the boat will be conducting a namesake visit to the Commonwealth of Kentucky, March 25-28, 2007. Visiting Bardstown, Columbia, Elizabethtown, Frankfort, Hodgenville, Lexington, Liberty, Louisville, and Russell Springs, Commander Holt, along with Lieutenant Junior Grade Gregory J. Twohig, Senior Chief Electronics Technician (SS) William Dyers, Machinist Mate 2nd Class (SS) Jeremiah Griggs, and Sonar Technician 2nd Class (SS), Michael Lee, will be visiting historical sites, speaking to high school and college students, participating in local events, and meeting local civic and government leaders.
